How a New Deck Can Change Your Summer
Deck installations are a popular choice when it comes to home improvement. They can improve your property’s curb appeal and make your family more comfortable. This is especially true during the summer months when more people prefer to spend time outdoors. How can a new deck change your summer this year?
- Enjoy Your Own Private Open-Air Gathering Place
You’ll always have an open-air gathering place ready to go. Whether it’s an impromptu visit with a few friends or a dinner for the whole family, you can enjoy it under the sun or stars on your deck.
- Host More Barbecues and Summer Parties
A new deck provides you more reasons to host events at home. Plan barbecues, pool parties, picnics, and more. Guests will love hanging out and getting some fresh air. You can utilize more entertaining space through clever layouts that feature different deck shapes or multiple levels.
- Transforms the Look of Your Yard
A deck enhances the look of your yard. It can add a beautiful quality that you can work into your landscaping. You can even pull it all together with outdoor décor, hanging baskets, or railing planters.
- Do More with the Space That You Have
You can do more with the space you have when you install a deck. Extend your garden by adding strawberries, tomatoes, or more in growing bags that hang from railings, posts, or walls. You can create an outdoor kitchen area or install seating with built-in benches. Outdoor storage boxes can also be set up on your deck.
A new deck will present new opportunities this summer and every summer after! Stop by or contact John’s Lumber in Clinton Township or Shelby Township to learn more about materials, installation, and financing options.
5 Things to Know Before You Build a Deck
A deck can be a wonderful addition to your home. It will provide your family more space to enjoy and can increase your property’s resale value. What should you know before you get started on a new deck?
- You Need a Budget – As with any household project, you are going to need a budget. Decks cost money. A very small, simple deck may cost around $2,000. Larger projects with more features can cost over $12,000. Make sure you can fund the job from start to finish with some room in your budget to spare.
- Start with a Deck Plan – You need a plan. Decks aren’t just square platforms of wood. They come in all shapes and sizes. Check out examples of other decks and look at materials to get started.
- Building Codes May Apply – Find out what building codes or homeowners’ association rules will apply to your project. If you don’t, you could wind up in legal trouble later.
- Apply for A Permit – You may be tempted to skip the permit. Don’t do this. A permit is needed to ensure that your plans are structurally sound and safe. You could run into issues later if you decide to sell your home with a deck that wasn’t built with a valid permit.
- DIY or Contractor – If you have experience in carpentry, then you may be able to construct your deck. However, if you don’t, then your best option may be to hire a professional. They know what they are doing, will work efficiently, and can recommend the best materials and methods.
Building a deck can be very rewarding. Let John’s Lumber help you create the perfect outdoor space that matches your home and meets all building codes. Give us a call today or stop by our Clinton Twp. or Shelby Twp. location for your custom deck estimate.
Decking Decisions
Search for decks online, and you’ll find a huge variety of styles, materials, and layouts. The choices you make will affect the return you get on your investment. Read below to understand more about the basics before you build.
What Should I Use to Build My Deck?
Today’s homeowners have many options when choosing materials for a deck. Each comes with a different list of benefits and drawbacks. Which building supply will work best for you?
- Pressure-Treated Wood – This material is easy to find and economical. It can survive for up to 15 years if regularly treated with a water repellent. It may be susceptible to splintering and, if untreated, it can turn grey.
- Cedar or Redwood – This type of timber is resistant to insects and rot and can be used untreated. It offers a lifespan that can exceed 20 years. The downside is that it is expensive to buy. If redwood or cedar sapwood are used, they can break down or rot in moist conditions.
- Composite Material – Consists of a plastic-wood material that is nearly indestructible. It is low-maintenance and resistant to rot, skidding and free of splinters. It can be stained to match your home’s aesthetic. Some varieties have a plastic texture that may not be as attractive as natural wood. The color may fade over time as well. Sawdust will have to be collected during construction because it is not biodegradable.
If you are having trouble making decking decisions, let us know. We can provide recommendations or an estimate for the perfect deck!
Building the Right Deck for Your Space
Decks come in all shapes and sizes. Some have multiple levels with stairs while others may sit low to the ground. There are creative layouts with curves or clever architectural elements. Some have fancy railings or extra details like benches, balusters, planters, and more. There is no one-size-fits-all option when it comes to decks. The key is planning a deck that fits your outdoor space.
Questions to Ask Before You Build a Deck
There are several factors to consider before you finalize your deck design. Answering these questions now will ensure that you build an outdoor area that you will love and will meet all structural and legal requirements.
- What Is the Purpose of the Deck? – Is this deck intended for family barbecues? Will you use it to enjoy the occasional sunny afternoon or will you host parties with lots of people on it? This information can help you determine how to maximize your space and what features to include.
- What Do I Want It To Look Like? – You may already have an idea of what you want the deck to look like. If not, look at other decks for inspiration or come into John’s Lumber and speak to one of our specialists.
- What Is My Budget for This Project? – Budget is really important when building a deck. Know what you can spend, so you can find a way to balance cost and building materials.
- Do I Need a Building Permit? – Check with your local code enforcer to find out if you need to apply for a building permit.
- Are There Zoning or HOA Rules That Apply? – If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners’ association, check for rules related to construction. Also, look for local zoning laws that might affect your project.
