How Do I Know if I Need New Windows or Doors?

August 8, 2019

Johns Lumber How Do I Know If I Need New Windows or Doors

Windows and doors are an essential part of any home. We often take them for granted. They prevent intruders and wildlife from coming in and help protect us from the elements outdoors. They can last for years, but even the best brands have a lifespan. How can you tell if your windows and doors are ready to be replaced?

  • It’s Harder to Control Indoor Climate – If you notice drafts when doors and windows are closed or your energy bills are going up, then it’s likely time for an update. Deteriorated windows and doors won’t keep the elements out like they used to and will make it harder to maintain comfortable temperatures indoors.
  • Noise Pollution Is Heard Inside – Do you notice more sounds from outdoors making their way into your living space? Your windows and doors are likely not doing their job. Newer models offer better insulation, so your home stays peaceful.
  • Frames Feel Soft or Appear Damaged – If window or door frames feel soft or have noticeable damage, you may need at least a repair if not a whole replacement. Water damage can cause significant deterioration, which needs to be addressed quickly.
  • It’s Difficult to Open, Close, or Lock – If you can’t easily open, close, and/or lock your windows and doors, then that’s a sure sign you need new ones. Even hardware will age and eventually fail. Replace now before you can’t open or lock your home.

We can help you find the best products based on your household needs and budget. Stop by or contact John’s Lumber in Clinton Township or Shelby Township today to learn more about new door and window installation.

DIY Barnwood Projects

July 23, 2019

John's Lumber DIY Barn Wood Interiors

Barnwood is an incredibly popular material to work with and for good reason. As a recycled material, it is something you can feel good about putting to use while upgrading the look and appeal of your home. Here are a few of John’s Lumber reclaimed Barnwood projects you can do all on your own.

#1 – Decorative Shelving

Barnwood shelving is simple to construct and can be completed with standard shelving hardware. What better place for personal mementos?

#2 – Wall Paneling

Reclaimed Barnwood is the perfect material for paneling, which can be repurposed again at a later time if needed. This relatively simple project quickly infuses rustic charm in any room of your house and will inspire a farm like atmosphere.

#3 – Pallet Garden Walkway

Individual pieces of Barnwood can be arranged in a walkway fashion to help guests navigate your land. Unlike stones which commonly sink into the surrounding landscape, a pallet garden walkway is inexpensive and easy to maintain.

#4 – Rustic Bookcase

The natural allure of a rustic bookcase is hard to escape. Since you are crafting it yourself you get to choose how tall and wide it is, and add finishing touches as you please. This is a useful trick for adding book storage in spaces which do not accommodate standard bookcases.

The possibilities when working with Barnwood are limitless. Stop by either of John’s Lumber local store locations in Clinton Township and Shelby Township to pick-up some reclaimed Barnwood for your next project.

5 Reasons to Install New Windows in Your Home

July 11, 2019

Johns Lumber 5 Reasons to Install New Windows in Your Home

New windows can have a huge impact on your living space. If your home hasn’t been updated in a while, now is the time to think about your next project. Why should you consider installing new windows sooner rather than later?

  • New Features

Older windows usually have fewer features. Today’s models come with many helpful extras that improve the look and operation of your windows. Some features even make them easier to maintain. For example, some models have between-the-glass blinds that reduce dust in your home.

  • UV Protection

Natural light is lovely indoors. However, you don’t want ultraviolet rays to cause fading on interior surfaces, furniture, and home décor. New windows are available with double or triple panes with argon for UV protection.

  • Home Security and Safety

Strong windows mean improved home security for your family. Some models come with safety features like tempered glass that won’t splinter if broken. A new installation also provides you the opportunity to remove any broken or aging locks so that your windows are less likely to be used as a point of entry.

  • Indoor Noise Pollution

Noise pollution can affect your health and comfort. High-quality windows can be installed that shield your interior rooms from outdoor sounds. Some are specifically designed to maximize noise reduction.

  • Money-Saving Benefits

New windows can lower your monthly energy bills. They can provide better insulation so that your heating and cooling systems do not have to work as hard. They can also block sunlight during the warmer seasons to keep indoor temperatures down.

Installing new windows is a great investment for your home. They can make your rooms more inviting and help lower household expenses and increase your property value. Stop by or contact John’s Lumber in Shelby Township or Clinton Township today to learn more about new window features, installation, pricing and financing.

How a New Deck Can Change Your Summer

June 19, 2019

Johns Lumber How a New Deck Can Change Your Summer

Deck installations are a popular choice when it comes to home improvement. They can improve your property’s curb appeal and make your family more comfortable. This is especially true during the summer months when more people prefer to spend time outdoors. How can a new deck change your summer this year?

  • Enjoy Your Own Private Open-Air Gathering Place

You’ll always have an open-air gathering place ready to go. Whether it’s an impromptu visit with a few friends or a dinner for the whole family, you can enjoy it under the sun or stars on your deck.

  • Host More Barbecues and Summer Parties

A new deck provides you more reasons to host events at home. Plan barbecues, pool parties, picnics, and more. Guests will love hanging out and getting some fresh air. You can utilize more entertaining space through clever layouts that feature different deck shapes or multiple levels.

  • Transforms the Look of Your Yard

A deck enhances the look of your yard. It can add a beautiful quality that you can work into your landscaping. You can even pull it all together with outdoor décor, hanging baskets, or railing planters.

  • Do More with the Space That You Have

You can do more with the space you have when you install a deck. Extend your garden by adding strawberries, tomatoes, or more in growing bags that hang from railings, posts, or walls. You can create an outdoor kitchen area or install seating with built-in benches. Outdoor storage boxes can also be set up on your deck.

A new deck will present new opportunities this summer and every summer after! Stop by or contact John’s Lumber in Clinton Township or Shelby Township to learn more about materials, installation, and financing options.

5 Things to Know Before You Build a Deck

June 6, 2019

Johns Lumber What You Need to Know Before Building a Deck

A deck can be a wonderful addition to your home. It will provide your family more space to enjoy and can increase your property’s resale value. What should you know before you get started on a new deck?

  • You Need a Budget – As with any household project, you are going to need a budget. Decks cost money. A very small, simple deck may cost around $2,000. Larger projects with more features can cost over $12,000. Make sure you can fund the job from start to finish with some room in your budget to spare.
  • Start with a Deck Plan – You need a plan. Decks aren’t just square platforms of wood. They come in all shapes and sizes. Check out examples of other decks and look at materials to get started.
  • Building Codes May Apply – Find out what building codes or homeowners’ association rules will apply to your project. If you don’t, you could wind up in legal trouble later.
  • Apply for A Permit – You may be tempted to skip the permit. Don’t do this. A permit is needed to ensure that your plans are structurally sound and safe. You could run into issues later if you decide to sell your home with a deck that wasn’t built with a valid permit.
  • DIY or Contractor – If you have experience in carpentry, then you may be able to construct your deck. However, if you don’t, then your best option may be to hire a professional. They know what they are doing, will work efficiently, and can recommend the best materials and methods.

Building a deck can be very rewarding. Let John’s Lumber help you create the perfect outdoor space that matches your home and meets all building codes. Give us a call today or stop by our Clinton Twp. or Shelby Twp. location for your custom deck estimate.

Decking Decisions

May 14, 2019

Johns Lumber Decking Decisions

Search for decks online, and you’ll find a huge variety of styles, materials, and layouts. The choices you make will affect the return you get on your investment. Read below to understand more about the basics before you build.

What Should I Use to Build My Deck?

Today’s homeowners have many options when choosing materials for a deck. Each comes with a different list of benefits and drawbacks. Which building supply will work best for you?

  • Pressure-Treated Wood – This material is easy to find and economical. It can survive for up to 15 years if regularly treated with a water repellent. It may be susceptible to splintering and, if untreated, it can turn grey.
  • Cedar or Redwood – This type of timber is resistant to insects and rot and can be used untreated. It offers a lifespan that can exceed 20 years. The downside is that it is expensive to buy. If redwood or cedar sapwood are used, they can break down or rot in moist conditions.
  • Composite Material – Consists of a plastic-wood material that is nearly indestructible. It is low-maintenance and resistant to rot, skidding and free of splinters. It can be stained to match your home’s aesthetic. Some varieties have a plastic texture that may not be as attractive as natural wood. The color may fade over time as well. Sawdust will have to be collected during construction because it is not biodegradable.

If you are having trouble making decking decisions, let us know. We can provide recommendations or an estimate for the perfect deck!

Building the Right Deck for Your Space

May 7, 2019

Johns Lumber Building the Right Deck for Your Space

Decks come in all shapes and sizes. Some have multiple levels with stairs while others may sit low to the ground. There are creative layouts with curves or clever architectural elements. Some have fancy railings or extra details like benches, balusters, planters, and more. There is no one-size-fits-all option when it comes to decks. The key is planning a deck that fits your outdoor space.

Questions to Ask Before You Build a Deck

There are several factors to consider before you finalize your deck design. Answering these questions now will ensure that you build an outdoor area that you will love and will meet all structural and legal requirements.

  • What Is the Purpose of the Deck? – Is this deck intended for family barbecues? Will you use it to enjoy the occasional sunny afternoon or will you host parties with lots of people on it? This information can help you determine how to maximize your space and what features to include.
  • What Do I Want It To Look Like? – You may already have an idea of what you want the deck to look like. If not, look at other decks for inspiration or come into John’s Lumber and speak to one of our specialists.
  • What Is My Budget for This Project? – Budget is really important when building a deck. Know what you can spend, so you can find a way to balance cost and building materials.
  • Do I Need a Building Permit? – Check with your local code enforcer to find out if you need to apply for a building permit.
  • Are There Zoning or HOA Rules That Apply? – If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners’ association, check for rules related to construction. Also, look for local zoning laws that might affect your project.
