Treated lumber is the material of choice for any structural outdoor project. Treated lumber is strong, lightweight, easily machined with tools and relatively inexpensive. Treated wood is resistant to bacteria, fungi and insects don’t find it appetizing at all. When untreated wood is in contact with the ground or moisture for any period of time, bacteria, fungi and insects attack the wood, producing rot. Untreated wood like pine will only last a year or two if touching moist ground.

Treated lumber is wood that has been immersed in a liquid preservative and placed in a pressure chamber. The chamber forces the chemical into the wood fibers. The pressurized approach makes sure that the chemical makes it to the core of each piece of wood -- it is much more effective than simply soaking the wood in the chemical.

Pressure Treatment was invented in the 1930’s and test pieces from then still show no signs of rot, insects or fungi problems. Safe to say, treated lumber will last a lifetime.

Treated lumber has recently undergone a change (in 2002). The original material called CCA has been replaced with a new formulation called Copper Azol (or CA-B for short). The EPA mandated that change a few years ago. CA-B protects just like CCA, except CA-B requires the use of a more corrosion resistant fastening and hanging system. What does that mean to you? Really nothing except the deck nails, deck screws and joist hangers we sell with decks are all designed for the new Copper Azol treatment.
